"To glean is to listen. My practice begins there — in transmuted matter, in text, where sense, body and soul are inseparable."
Geneviève Levivier is a Brussels-based visual artist whose practice weaves together textile installation, mixed-media sculpture and site-specific works. Working with gleaned organic materials — eggshells, flowers, swamp oak, raw fibres — alongside natural dyes, wax, homemade biopolymers and occasional digital processes, she performs a material metamorphosis in which matter that has lived one life is reborn into another. Canonical texts — Beauvoir, Wollstonecraft, Dante — are equally gleaned and woven into the work itself, becoming material as much as meaning.
Her work freely combines textile know-how with pictorial techniques, playing with light, openwork and projected shadow to create what she calls "textile stained glass" — pieces that shimmer, breathe and interact with architecture, space and the body. Slow, eco-responsible conception is central to her practice: materials are locally gleaned and transformed in her Brussels workshop before being integrated into the work.
After a decade creating textiles for the world's most prestigious fashion houses — Dior, Alaïa, Balenciaga, Gaultier — Levivier turned fully to her own artistic practice, now internationally recognised through solo and group exhibitions at the DOGA Museum Oslo, MUBE São Paulo, Triennale di Milano, Milan Design Week, New York Textile Month and Design Museum Ghent, among others.
Represented by Galerie La Patinoire Royale | Valérie Bach in Brussels, her work has entered public and private collections across Europe, the Americas and the Middle East, and has been distinguished by the Michelangelo Foundation's Homo Faber Selection (2025) and two consecutive New York Textile Festival laureates, curated by Lee Edelkoort.
